“Comparing Apples and Oranges”
By Jimmy Stevens
INTRODUCTION: What does the word “comparison” mean to you?
A. Things that we compare: Baby milestones, aches and pains, garden seed, vehicles.
B. Rules when making comparisons.
Objects compared must be of the same class with the same purposes. Expression: “Like comparing Apples & Oranges or Horses & Cows”.
Conclusions drawn depend on the things compared and the opinions of those making the comparisons.
I. The principles of “comparisons” also apply to spiritual things. Yet, many will try to
compare their idea about religion with God’s. A. NO CHURCH LIKE THE CHURCH OF CHRIST
No other was bought with the blood of Christ, Acts 20:28
No other has Christ as its head. Eph 1:22-23, Col 1:18
Christ has given himself to no other church. Eph 5:25, Polygamy?
Christ will save only one church. Eph 5:23
No other is blessed with all spiritual blessings, Eph 1:3
All so-called Christ-centered religions began since 33 A.D. (Most in the 1500’s).
B. NO BOOK LIKE THE BIBLE:
II. No one has ever written a book, from a purely human viewpoint, that can correctly deal with the most basic human needs.
The Bible has successfully addressed all needs, since the beginning of time.
It answers: WHERE DID WE COME FROM? WHY ARE WE HERE? WHERE ARE WE GOING?
How to raise children, overcome emotional distress, what is morally right and wrong, how to be successful in life, how to have a happy marriage, or anything that deals with human relationships.
Other reasons: Never pass away, Matt 24:35, 1 Pet 1:23-25. Tells of origins, Psa 19:1.
Tells how to live right, 2 Pet 1:3. Sufficient, spiritual guide, 2 Tim 3:16-17
C. NO PLACE LIKE HEAVEN
Jehovah’s Witnesses--The righteous will live on a purged earth.
Some Christians live as if this earth is all there is. 2 Pet 3:10-11, Luke 12:13-21
Why we cannot compare the earth with heaven. No night there. Rev 21:25-27. Daylight
from God, Rev 22:5. Faithful will live in a permanent, heavenly home. 2 Cor 4:17-5:1. An
inheritance, 1 Pet 1:4
D. NO LIFE LIKE THE CHRISTIAN’S LIFE.
People have tried to find joy and happiness in many earthly, material things: Money and/or what it can buy, entertainment, which lasts only as long as the performance, alcoholic drink, drugs, environments which promote immorality such as dances, nightclubs, etc. When the thrill is gone nothing is left but loss, regret, wasted time.
Solomon on the futility of earthly things. Eccl 1:14, 2:26, 5:10, 6:2, 12:13
Eternal hope. Rom 12:1-2, 1 Pet 1:15, Gal 2:20, 1:3, Rom 6:1-4
E. NO GOD LIKE OUR GOD IN HEAVEN
Remember the golden calf in the wilderness. Exod 32:1-4
Buddha, Allah, worldly riches, other gods do not compare with the God of heaven.
Only the God in heaven can be described as having power to create all things. Psa 19:1;
raise the dead, Eph 1:19-20; superior goodness, Psa 52:1; superior wisdom, 1 Cor 2:1-9; Psa 139
CONCLUSION: We have the freedom to live any way we want, but nothing can compare with the eternal value of God’s provisions.
